“Casa” as all Moroccans call it, is the economic capital of Morocco. Casablanca is a showcase of modern Morocco and prefigures the one of tomorrow. This predominant role is the result of the will of one man, General Lyautey the first General Resident of the French Republic from 1912 to 1925. Against all odds, Lyautey decided to make Casablanca the economic centre of the Kingdom. He developed the activity of the port and undertook the urban development of the new districts. From then on, the city enjoyed a spectacular expansion, which still seems not to have to stop.
Today, Casablanca is a little more than a tourist stopover between two imperial cities. The Hassan II Mosque, or “the highest religious building in the universe”, has enough to attract crowds: a minaret 200 m high, twice as big as the towers of Chartres Cathedral ! and a magnificent interior that brings together all aspects of Moroccan art. Two thirds of the site is built on the Atlantic Ocean.
